Thanks for the suggestion. It seems to have some effect. (See below.) I am puzzled why the setting for IE should have *any* effect on non-Internet activities.
However, the real problem appears to be somewhat deeper. It is not just that autorun doesn't work (I can live with that), it is that the CDs are *not recognized*. As far as the file explorer is concerned, there is no CD there! But I have discovered that if I go open the "Disk Management" window, the CD is detected and then the file explorer sees it too. But not unless and until I open the Disk Management window. At this point, autoplay works when I put another CD in the drive. (Perhaps changing the IE settings had an effect on autoplay; but Disk Management could see the CDs before I make the IE changes.)
Given that Disk Management can see the disks, any ideas as to what to what the issues are and/or how to fix them?
Thanks.

Is "Autoplay" on, in each drives properties ?.
Are "Allow Active Active content from CDs to run on My Computer" and
"Allow Active Active content to run in files on My Computer" both checked in IE? drop-down
Tools | Internet Explorer | Options | Advanced | scroll down to Security ?
If unchecked, and after installing whatever it is your are trying to install, you may want to put them back to how they were :-)

Both drives can play music and I can burn music and videos to both drives. I tried upgrading the drivers and even buying new drives, but the problem remains: The new drives have the same problem. (Since I have a home network, I can still read data disks and install programs from another computer, but that's a pain.) Any ideas?
Thanks.
