Oh... I am so not knowledge-able..

My Compaq Presario Laptop takes SOOO long to start and shut down. Way too
many programs load when I turn it on.

So I went to the area (msconfig) where i can UN check mark them.. but it
changes something and I get an error message that i have SELECTIVE STARTUP
now.. why? Why cant I remove things that auto start? How do I remove them
from the msconfig list?

That's not an error. It's telling you what you already did. When uncheck items in msconfig that automatically means it's in selective startup because you selected something not to start. To not see that message the next time you change something, and reboot and it appears just check the box to not have it alert you again (until the next time you change something).

That said, msconfig is not intended as a startup program manager. It's there for troubleshooting.

First step to eliminate startup programs should be to check in the options for the program you don't want to start and see if there is a setting to tell it not to run at startup. The next step is to remove any entries you don't want from the two startup folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

For anything else uncheck their entries in the startup tab of msconfig:
Start | Run | Msconfig | Ok

Another option is to remove the reference to them from one of these keys in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

Make sure you have a backup of the registry using a program like ERUNT before making any changes to the registry.

Also when shutting down, everytime, something pops up hpqimzone.exe is
shutting down - why? What do I do.

If you don't need it don't have it run at startup.

With all this I am having sound issues. Skips jumps all the time, we cant
watch a movie, it skips when starting up. Playing movies is a little jumpy
as well...

It's best to keep posts to a single issue. I suggest you repost on the sound problem and give more details on the hardware and the history of the problem.
