OK, I've done everything you very generously offered here. No dice. Still get
the "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Either the name was typed
incorrectly or..."
I set up a network called Home on both machines, shared the installed
printer on Dell#1. Made sure both firewalls (native Windows) has File and
Printer Sharing checked. When I do the the add printer on Dell#2, and select
Browse for printers, I don't see the printer listed, just workgroups. If I
expand MS Windows Network, I see Home. If I expand this, I see Dell1 (the
name of the computer where the printer is installed). Double-clicking on
Dell1 does nothing, and if I highlight Dell1 and type the printer name
(with\\, without \\, full path name, just the printer name), I get the
dreaded Not Found message.
One thing, I saw no place to
Ensure
that the firewall on your XP PC is set to allow access to remote printers.
and I saw no place to ensure that the box with he same name is checked in
the Firewall exceptions list. This list does not list computers, just
programs, it looks like .
Still stumped.

Host should be the Dell #1 PC and Guest the Dell #2..
Install the printer on the Host PC. Then using Control Panel>Network
Setup Wizard, enable File & Printer Sharing and make sure you check the
box to allow others to print to your printers. Next under Start>Settings>
Printers, select the printer, check the box to share the printer and assign
a name. Keep the name short, no blanks, something like Printer2.
You should now be able to add the printer to your Guest PCs using Start>
Control Panel>Printers & Faxes>Add Printer. Check the radio button
"A network printer ..." and then either browse for the printer or enter its
name (using \\PCName\PrinterName) and continue until finished. Ensure
that the firewall on your XP PC is set to allow access to remote printers.
If using XP's native firewall ensure that File and Printer Sharing is
enabled and that the box with he same name is checked in the Firewall
exceptions list. The PCName can be found at:
Rightclick My Computer icon on Dell #1>Properties>Computer Name tab.
It may look something like: "Home-66djksjcpv". Don't type the quotes.
Click "Next" and it should install the printer on the Dell #2 PC when
it finds it.
Note: You can follow the same procedure to get access to
"Files" from one PC to the other.

Let me try this again:
Two XP Dell desktops plugged into a Linksys WRT54G router to share the IP
address. On Dell#1 I installed HP 5610 printer, connected through a USB port.
I have 'shared' this printer by selecting the printer Share radio button. On
Dell#2, I select Add new printer=>Network=>Browse. I wait for the list to
come up and see the printer installed on Dell#1. I select it, press Next and
get "Cannot find this printer. Make sure the name is typed correctly" or
something like that. I should note that the name of the installed printer in
the displayed list after pressing Browse is doubled; in other words, I see
\\(Dell#1)\HP Officejet 5600 series HP Officejet 5600 series
the name is listed twice.
When I go to Dell#1 and select Control Panel=> Printers, I see
HP Officejet 5600 series
I have disabled both firewalls, have checked the TCP/IP for printer sharing
exceptions.
I am stumped.
