I have a PC with Windows XP Media Center installed. I cannot install any network adapters (tried several differnet brands). I get an error "Cannot install this hardware" & "The system cannot find the file specified". I have done a reinstall, and the reinstall cannot find some of the files (mostly network related: hypertrm.dl_; icwconn2.ex_...about 20 altogether) on the CD. I can see the files on the CD, but I believe that the incorrect versions have been installed previously. I cannot find any versions that the installation will accept. I can finish the reinstall by skipping these files. When I run a sfc /scannow, it also cannot find the correct files on the CD.
I have tried removing all of the adapters (including the hidden ones in safe mode). I have run registry cleaners. I have reset the permissions in the registry, and I have reset the local security policy.
I am trying to avoid a format & reinstall because of the software on the PC.
Is there anyway that I can rewrite the networking related components of the operating system?
Sorry I can't help with your problem, but you might be in for more by the use of a registry cleaner. If you have been using one regularly before this problem developed that could be a contributing cause. Do not use a registry cleaner. They do more harm than good. Good luck.
