Not an easy situation to resolve. First, you need to add a System
Environment variable:
DevMgr_Show_NonPresent_Devices
and set it's value = 1
Reboot and enter BIOS setup. Disable the on-board NIC. Return
to Windows.
Open Device Manager, Click View, tic/check "Show Hidden Devices"
Expand the Network Adapters category. You'll likely see a number of
entries shown in diminished tone or grayed out. Right Click each entry
and choose Uninstall. Repeat this for all "Phantom" entries.
Download the latest driver package for the NIC ( Intel, VIA, nVidia..)
Go to Add/Remove programs in Control Panel. Scroll through the list
and uninstall any/all NIC driver/support packages.
Reboot, re-enable the on-board NIC - when XP enumerates (Detects)
the NIC do not let it install the driver automatically. Point it to the
driver
you downloaded. You may have to unpack/expand the package to be
able to access the drivers sub-folder.

There is an onboard NIC. This is the one that I would like to get working
although PCI NICs give the same errors.

Please explain the question regarding enumeration?

The NIC does appear in the Network Adapters category with a yellow
exclamation and the correct driver is loaded. "Device status This device
is not configured correctly (Code 1). To reinstall the drivers for this
device, click Reinstall Driver"

I have done the inplace upgrade, but it fails on 20 files which I have to
skip...there is no problem with the CD.

regret. Which PCI slot are you installing the NIC into >? When the
device is enumerated what specific error code is shown ? Does the
NIC appear in the Network adapters category of Device Manager
with a yellow exclamation symbol preceding the entry or does it end
up in the "Other" devices category.

If you have a XP installation CD your best solution may be a Repair
or "In-Place" upgrade of XP. Prior to doing that I'd restore any of the
Registry backups that the cleaners made. Before doing a XP repair
install it's always a good idea to ensure your current setup is imaged
or at the minimum have your personal data backed up.

I have a PC with Windows XP Media Center installed. I cannot install any
network adapters (tried several differnet brands). I get an error "Cannot
install this hardware" & "The system cannot find the file specified". I
have done a reinstall, and the reinstall cannot find some of the files
(mostly network related: hypertrm.dl_; icwconn2.ex_...about 20
altogether) on the CD. I can see the files on the CD, but I believe that
the incorrect versions have been installed previously. I cannot find any
versions that the installation will accept. I can finish the reinstall by
skipping these files. When I run a sfc /scannow, it also cannot find the
correct files on the CD.

I have tried removing all of the adapters (including the hidden ones in
safe mode). I have run registry cleaners. I have reset the permissions
in the registry, and I have reset the local security policy.

I am trying to avoid a format & reinstall because of the software on the
PC.

Is there anyway that I can rewrite the networking related components of
the operating system?
