Participating and searching are two very different things. I recommend
a newsreader for participating and Googlegroups for searching.

Also note that the abilityto search back to 1991 (or any date) is not
a function of the newsreader. It depends entirely on how long the news
*server* you use keeps messages.

Of course! I only know of one news server that only goes back one year.
Googlegroups can go back 15 years or more.

As with any category of software, you need to choose the one that
works best for you. But note that I spoke about news *readers*, not
news servers. The Microsoft news server works just fine in conjunction
with whatever newsreader you like best.

Yes newsreaders depend on using news servers, thus my point. And once
all of the good news servers are gone, our newsreaders will become
useless. And one by one, news servers are disappearing off of the
planet. So not too far in the future, we all will be forced to use web
based readers.

That's your prediction, and it may or may not come true. Personally,
my crystal ball is in the shop and I'm not willing to make any
predictions.

But whether or not it comes true is irrelevant to the present
discussion. At least for the time being there are lots of good news
servers around. Msnews.microsoft.com works just fine for these
Microsoft newsgroups. It's what I use and it's what I recommend that
everyone participating here use. In my view, it gives you a much
better experience than Microsoft's web-based interface.
