I'm trying to get this working in a more simple environment first - my LAN.
Neither PC needs to go through a firewall at this point. There is a hardware
firewall between the PCs and the internet, but they won't get routed to it,
right?
It doesn't get routed to it but it does go through it. I recall an issue where going through routers you needed to add the remotes IP to the request or something like that in order for it to complete properly. I don't recall if this was all around or only on remotes not on the LAN, I'll take a look around to see if I can find it again.
Why not use Remote Desktop instead of RA? With RD you can have full control of the remote machine to accomplish the tasks you want to do.

I need to help my sister on a problem with her PC and I plan to use Remote
Assistance. Since we'll be connecting through the internet with 2 firewalls
inbetween, I thought I'd try this out first between 2 systems on my own LAN.
I've set up the two messengers ids and logged into them on my two computers.
When I send the invitation from the novice the expert sees the request and
responds with the <alt> T.
The novice's system has a message saying to please wait for a response or
cancel the request. The expert's system just has a blinking cursor at the
end of the line that is displayed just after the invitation that has been
accepted.
What now? I cannot find "Take Control" anywhere (ie. File/Edit/New/ etc.)
pull downs.
Once you help me around that, will I be "logged in" at the id on the remote
computer? I want to be able to d/l tools and run maleware scans on the
remote computer.
Thanks in advance for helping me
