Re: User Name

This morning when I booted my computer displayed the message, "To begin Click your user name." I had never seen this message before and my computer always booted to the Desktop. I don't understand why, all of a sudden, I have to click a User Name.

When I checked the Control Panel | User Name I found that a new User Account had been added to my system. I didn't add this. The User Account Name is ASP.NET MACHINE A.... I checked the asp.net site and found, "Microsoft ASP.NET is a free technology that allows programmers to create dynamic web applications."

Since I am not a programmer and do not want to create dynamic web applications I am at a loss to understand how this account got there.

The only changes made to my system was the installation of a new rinter - HP C5180.

1. Could the new User Account have been added by this installation process?

Yes, it was added because the printer installation installed a version of ..Net framework. If you look in Add/Remove programs you should see a version of .Net framework listed.

2. May I safely delete the account.

Yes it's ok to delete, though you don't need to.

3. If I delete this account will my system go back to booting up to the Desktop?

No. Now you should go to the windows update site and manually scan for updates. There might be an update for the .Net that was installed. This could solve the auto login issue.

If that doesn't do it you can easily go back to an auto login. Here are two ways to do that:

1. Go to Start | Run and type in: control userpasswords2 | Ok.

2. On the Users tab, clear the Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer check box and then click OK.

3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the user name and password for the account you want to be logged on each time you start your computer.

You can accomplish the same thing by:

Download and install TweakUI for XP and use its auto logon feature.

Lastly you can add the Dialog box that comes up when running control userpasswords2 to the Control Panel with the following tweak:

Add Control User Passwords2 to the Control Panel (Line 1)
