Re: Help and Support facility

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

There should be updates for the Help and Support or it would not correspond
with the updated system, but in this specific part, there's nothing to
change because it's been the same procedure for several Operative Systems if
not all... I don't see the inconsistency comparing both articles, what I
read are two different explanations, probably written by different people at
different times but to me both say the same... they may confuse you because
one is more detailed than the other but both give the same instructions. I'
ll break it down in numbered paragraphs, maybe this helps.

1. 'Help and Support':
You should print these instructions before continuing. They will not be
available after you shut your computer down in step 2.

1. MS website:

2. 'Help and Support':
Click Start, click Shut Down, and then,

2. MS website:
Click Start and then click Shut Down.

3. 'Help and Support':
In the drop-down list, click Shut down. In the Shut Down Windows dialogue
box, click Restart, and then click OK.

3. MS website:
In the drop-down list of the Shut Down Windows dialogue box, click
Restart, and then click OK.

4. 'Help and Support':
When you see the message Please select the operating system to start,
press F8. (this is in case of dual or multi-boot installations)

4. MS website:
As your computer restarts but before Windows launches, press F8.

5. 'Help and Support':
Use the arrow keys to highlight the appropriate option, (OS is the
option) and then press ENTER.

5. MS website:
On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating
systems, you can press F8 when the boot menu appears. Use the arrow keys to
highlight the appropriate safe mode option, and then press ENTER.

6. 'Help and Support':
If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation
that you need to access using the arrow keys, and then press ENTER."

6. MS website:

If you had a dual boot installation you would understand both descriptions
to be exactly the same.. this may be confusing to the user with a single
installation because you don't have the OS option, just keep in mind the
instructions are written to cover all situations.

I have enabled full automatic updates. However this has not altered the
text
in the Help and Support facility for 'Safe Mode' in this instance. Is the
Help and Support facility actually subject to live updates? Or is it part
of
XP that cannot be altered?

For the Updates, configure Automatic Updates in Start\Control
Panel\Automatic Updates.. enable fully automatic updates or with
notification.
For manual updates, go to Start\Help and Support and click on the "Keep
PC
updated with Windows Update" link and follow the instructions there, you
will need to download a program to download updates.

For safe mode, click on Start Button\Shut down\click on the drop-down
menu
to select the shutdown option and highlight "Restart" \and Accept\the
computer will seemingly shut down and automatically restart a second
later,
as the restart begins, press the F8 key and hold, a
menu of different logon options will appear, highlight the "Safe Mode"
logon
option with the arrow keys and press Enter.

For computers where users have two or more Operative Systems installed,
called dual or multiboot systems, (which is obviously not your case) the
F8
key can be pressed as the restart begins, or after the Operative System
is
selected in the OS logon menu... the only difference is you either press
the
F8 key before or after you select the Operative System.

Please advise how and where I can get updates for XP Home edition
'Help
and
Support' . I have found one article on 'safe mode' in my version of
XP
SP2
to be nonsense when compared to the same article as described on the
MS

Article on safe mode found in 'Help and Support' on my PC:

"To start the computer in safe mode

Click Start, click Shut Down, and then, in the drop-down list, click
Shut

In the Shut Down Windows dialogue box, click Restart, and then click
OK.
When you see the message Please select the operating system to start,
press
F8.
Use the arrow keys to highlight the appropriate option, and then press
ENTER.
