Windows Installer Error Code 1324

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Using the Events Log, I was able to find the error code which is 1324, or
11324, depending on where I access the number. Anyway Error 1324 is The
folder path contains an invalid character. There is nothing wrong with this
folder path, and there is nothing in the registry related to this alleged
error.

I have been trying to install programs, such as Windows Defender and Adobe
Reader. This problem prevents installation of programs which use Windows
Installer, which can severely limit what I can install onto this computer.
Actually, I just tried to reinstall Adobe Reader and although it still gives
error 1324, the wording to the error is slightly different and still
mentions the same error. In one window it says it is using Windows
Installer, and then later says it is using InstallShield. I thought they
were two different installation programs.

I found the error code meaning at
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa372835.aspx

Is there any way of testing the folder path? It is on a removable drive and
I get the error whether the drive is turned on or off. Windows installer
seems to think there is an error in this path. The path in question is
actually irrelevant. This is a backup drive. I have no idea why Windows
Installer is programmed to check the whole computer and come up with the
error almost instantly. I don't think it actually checks the drive, but
rather is checking a directory table somewhere. What would be the filename
for a directory table?

Please help, as I might need to reinstall Windows, again.

Thanks

John
