I have an IBM eSeries 200 Server. 1 Ghz cpu, 1288 Gb RAM, 265 Mb ATI video
card and Windows XP Pro, SP2. I am fully up to date with security fixes. I
am
running Norton Internet Security 2007

Recently, my mouse has begun to act very strangely, the curser falling way
behind the physical movement of the mouse on the mat, failing to respond
at
all, or freezing solid until the mouse is disconnected or the whole system
rebooted. After either of the last actions, it is fine for a while, then
slows down again. It becomes almost impossible to accurately click on
something.

I have a) uninstalled all drivers and reinstalled. b) bought another wired
mouse and installed the software c) done the same thing with a new
wireless
mouse. I think that I have established that it is not the mouse.

This is a business machine; I have no games installed, or other weird
software. I have Office 2003, Acrobat etc That's all.

The machine is becoming unusable for daily work.

I am not an expert; is there anything else that anyone can kindly tell me
that could be causing this software conflict?

This is now a relatively old machine; built 2001 but, as above, has had
Crucial memory, Crucial Radeon X700 video card and a brand new HDD added
over
the last two years.

Could it be the BIOS? If so, is upgrading this easy?

I wouldbe really grateful if someone could point me in the right direction
(excuse the pun). I run my own business and this is really causing me
heartache.

With many thanks

Is the mouse ball dirty? They tend to collect dust bunnies on the contacts.
