is it possible to have one
without the other? i want search removed from the start menu and to still
have F3 start a document search.
Yes, if you use the XP Start menu and not Classic.
This will only remove Search from the new XP Start menu not the Classic Start menu.
Right click the Start button.
On the Start Menu tab.
If Classic Start Menu is selected, select Start menu.
Click the Customize button next to Start menu.
Click the Advanced tab.
Scroll down in the Start menu items box and UNCheck: Search.
OK your way back out.
F3 and Search will still work.

Data type Range Default value

REG_DWORD 0 | 1 0
NoFind Description
Removes or disables selected search features.
This entry stores the setting of the Remove Search menu from Start Menu Group Policy. Group Policy adds this entry to the registry with a value of 1 when you enable the policy. If you disable the policy or set it to Not configured, Group Policy deletes this entry from the registry, and the system behaves as though the value is 0.
When the value of this entry is 1, the following features are removed or disabled; when the value is 0, these features operate normally:
* The Search item is removed from the Start menu and from the context menu that appears when you right-click the Start menu.
* The system does not respond when users press F3 or the Application key+F (the Application key has the Windows logo).
* In Windows Explorer, the Search item still appears on the Standard Buttons toolbar, but the system does not respond when the user presses CTRL+F.
* In Windows Explorer, the Search item does not appear in the context menu when you right-click an icon representing a drive or a folder.

John <John@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> hunted and pecked:
hello
i am looking to remove the search feature from my start menu, but i am
having problems doing so.
i know that, adding, NoFind, as a dword decimal value of '1' to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
in the registry editor, will remove search from the start menu, but it
also removes the accessing of 'search results' by simply pressing F3. i
still want to be able to search for files, with the F3 shortcut, but i do
not want to have search on my start menu. is it possible to have one
without the other? i want search removed from the start menu and to still
have F3 start a document search.
thanks
john
