My laptop does this all the time now (it is about 5 years old). I have found
out that if I unplug it and take the battery out so no power gets to it at
all, then plug it back in and turn it on then it will boot and find the HD.
Not sure why it does this.

Unfortunately my system has become unstable when turning on. It says
Operating Sys not found or HD not found or it will boot up to Desktop but I
didn't realize I should have done a backup. Any suggestions?
