I am running XP SP2. Since I installed XP on ME defrag worked a few times but now it is completely unresponsive. It opens but neither analyze nor start defragging. What could be the problem? Do I need to reinstall the XP again? Thanks for any hint to get this working again.
How large is the hard drive and how much free space does it have?

Well, you've got plenty of room so that isn't the issue. Are there any errors to give you a clue in Event Viewer?

Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]

Also, if you upgraded from a machine running ME that machine is elderly. I would do a hard drive diagnosis. Download a diagnostic utility from the drive mftr.'s website. You will create either a bootable floppy or cd with the file you download. Boot with that media and do a thorough test of the drive. If you get any physical errors, replace the hard drive.
