Here is the problem:
My laptop will not boot into Windows XP.
When I try booting from a Windows XP CD- after I get the
message "press any key to boot from CD" and
press any key, the CD drive runs for about 5 seconds then
stops and all I get is a blank screen. I know the CD is good.
I can use it one another computer.
I have heard that resetting CMOS can fix this problem. I took
apart my laptop but I can not find the battery.
I also think it might be the CD drive. But before I spend money
on the drive I want to see if resetting the CMOS helps.

It is very, very unlikely that your motherboard battery has anything to do with this. Either your optical drive has failed or you have other issues on the machine such as a bad power supply. Because you have a laptop, the best course of action would be to contact HP tech support unless you are extremely familiar with replacing laptop components and you have extra matching components (such as a new motherboard) on hand.
