Help! Windows will not install, keyboard locks!

I have never had a problem like this. Windows XP SP2 is giving me a fit on
one of my machines. I have run all kinds of tests on the hardware, including
hard drive diagnostics, system tests, and virus scans and no problem has been
found. I feel like I may have a corrupt Windows installation. The problem
that started this whole process is system freezes. System just stops and
takes about 5 reboots to work, and that's in safe mode. I tried to reinstall
using a windows XP cd. It made it to the point of me selecting repair etc and
the keyboard would not work. I tried 3 keyboards and they all stop at that
point. I've tried repair disks that boot and allow different diagnostics to
run and I can't find a problem/The mouse/keyboard works fine with all the
diagnostics. The hard drive is intact with all files still there. The
mouse/keyboard works fine with them. I've backed up the drive but I'm afraid
to format it because if windows quits at that point then I may never get it
installed. The machine is a HP 734 n wi 1 gig ram and 2400 processor. Also
the machine will not let me do a system restore with the HP system restore
feature. Can anyone help me? If more info is needed please let me know

Hi,
The steps I am going to proceed is to be done only after yoou have backed up
your data.
1) Create an emergency disk in Windows 98, you have many tools to create
this (you can download from sysinternals.com) or go to google and search for
Create an Windows 98 Emergency Disk or from below
URL(http://freepctech.com/pc/002/files010.shtml)
2) Change the boot priorty to 1.44" FDD, After the system boots and comes to
the command prompt, type fdisk which will say that the partitions have some
problem because it can read the NTFS file system.
3) Go to the option 3 where you can delete all partitions and then select
the option 1 to create the partition. After the partition is created with
FAT32 try to install the OS.
Option with Win XP CD:
Here boot the machine with the CD and remove all the partitions and freshly
install the OS. If this does not go through use the Low Level Disk Formatting
utility (Zero Fill Drive) in HP BIOS to delete all the partitions and install
the OS from Scrap.
1.1. Just one small question..

So far, I've used Partition Manager to remove the recovery partion (labeled
D), but before I also remove boot partion (labeled C) I'd like to try and
figure out how this will help the keyboard problem. The system will boot from
xp cd and load all the drivers. The install seems to be going okay and the
keyboard works fine up to the point of selecting install options. I can hit
f6 to load third party drivers (I don't load any), but then as soon as i get
the option to hit r for restore or enter to continue, then the keyboard won't
function. The number lock or anything won't work, mouse either. It's like
they suddenly disappear, and that's on 3 different keyboards. Now I did have
a wireless labtec keyboard and mouse at one time (serial) but I removed it. I
tried hooking it back up for this operation and even it works until I reach
that same point. I can boot the system to safe mode (after about 5 tries) and
it will stay in that state for weeks unless i try performing a bunch of
tasks. The system however freezes before a profile can load in normal mode.
I've tried using msconfig to modify startup to no avail. My biggest fear now
is that if I delete partition C, then I wont be able to install any operating
system because of the keyboard problem. By the way, I forgot to mention that
I do have a second hard drive installed that I use for storing the important
files. It has no operating system on it. If worse comes to worse, I will move
it to a different machine. The hard drive with the operating system is the 80
gig original that came with the machine. The second is 250 gig that I
installed about 2 years ago. I backed up C to that drive. I've got this
machine so screwed up that it used to boot to safe w/networking now it will
only go to safe w/no networking. The machine is hooked to a linksys wireless
router with a wired connection since it's in my computer room close to the
router. Finally, I haven't received any of the blue screens of death, only
freezes where everything stops responding. Any input anyone? Thanks for your
help
1.1.1. sounds like a problem with keyboard controller
Absolutely

I don't think that's a hard drive problem, and I don't think that further
partition changes will help. Your problem is just too consistently occurring
in concert with the OS loading, whether in normal startup or install startup.
Go to the BIOS again, and check the IRQs. Based on Safe Mode allowing you to
start, but not Safe Mode with Networking, you might have the same IRQ
assigned to your networking hardware and to your keyboard and/or mouse. If
that doesn't work, remove the hard drives and the optical drive and the
processor, and throw the rest of it off a rooftop.
1.1.1.1. Not quite sure how to tell

I tried to look in the bios but I didn't see anything as a keyboard. by the
way, I did delete the boot partition and tried to install. Same problem, so I
went back and restored the partition. Can you tell me what to look for in
bios? I'm absolutely dumbfounded. I have had and solved all sorts of computer
and windows problem, but this one beats them all. Next I'm going to try
Windows 98 boot disk and see if that helps
1.1.1.1.1. I am absolutely dumbfounded, too, and HP is not helping!

Not a WORD about the BIOS!
OK, when you do enter the BIOS, it will probably be by either AMI or Award.
Record the BIOS maker & version #, and I'll see if I can find which part of
the menu controls the resource assignments.
1.1.1.1.1.1. How strange is this?

I am actually writing this reply on the faulty machine. I have booted using
the Ultimate boot cd that allows the machine to run a specialized version of
XP from the cd and I am having no problems. Keyboard and mouse are working
fine, and there is no freezing. I can actually access every drive on the
computer, and also the internet. I have been able to download a windows 98
boot cd. This thing is getting weirder by the minute. Oh and in the meantime
ran a memory test from the cd and no problems were found. The time I was able
to boot in safe mode the system keeps trying to install a multiprocessor
pc??? I have never seen this before in my life. I did a system restore back
to earlier this month, to no avail. I'm ready to nominate myself for pc
problem of the year!
