Strange Things are Happening...

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Some curious things are happening on my XP Pro laptop.
No audio in Media Player, but audio is fine with non-Microsoft products,
e.g. Real Player. Not able to use FTP, Can't install latest Flash player,
Mail works fine. Also, when I mark an item as "Don't Display" in the System
Tray,
when I reboot, it comes back as displayed.
Problem appears to be O.S. related. This happened after an upgrade
from 98se, not a clean install.
Scans were done with several apps, and the system appears to be free
from viruses, etc.
I think there may be an O.S. database that is corrupt.
I found something in the KB, however the rebuild command was very arcane.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Dave
