Re: blank item in start/ msconfig

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Uncheck it in msconfig then delete the reference to it in the registry in
this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder

I unchecked said item from ...\Msconfig\startupreg,

then went to ...\Msconfig\startupfolder and found only a default file that
would not allow itself to be deleted.

Reboot and all seems well, the orphan is no longer appearing in msconfig
startup, in registry under the ...Msconfig\startupreg.

System appears to be running at optimum.
1.83 Ghz, 512 RAM, 40GB HDD, external 250GB, ...XP Home SP2, Comodo
firewire, Avast Antivirus,

All this because last weekend I reformatted my HDD after 4 years, and felt
it needed a good housekeeping and spring cleaning.

Reinstalled everything last week, and then even uninstalled a few software's
that I temporarily had reinstalled, as I realized they were unnecessary: one
of them could be the source of the orphan.

That being written, Where the orphan came from is anyone's guess.
It is gone.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much,
Robert

Thank you both.

However, when you write:
"Msconfig was not intended as a startup program manager but as a
troubleshooting tool, so if you uncheck items from msconfig you should
then
remove them from wherever they are loading."

This is where I am at a loss as I am unsure how to remove them.

Suggestions?

Robert

any ideas what this blank start up item is or was?

Perhaps a leftover from something I added/ removed?

You're right. It's an orphaned entry, most likely left over from
something that was installed or moved to a different folder. Just
delete that that value with regedit. To be save you might want to
export a copy of that key first.

Msconfig was not intended as a startup program manager but as a
troubleshooting tool, so if you uncheck items from msconfig you should
then remove them from wherever they are loading.

There is a possibility this orphaned entry is left over from the removal
of malware so make sure you have a current AV program with current
definitions and a combination of non viral anti-malware apps run
regularly in safe mode.
