Need help with Roxio and a CDRW on XPME

I trust that this isn't too far off-topic.

Before I got rid of my old 98SE I copied loads of pictures and mp3
stuff onto CDRWs that had been packet-formatted (?UDF?) by the
CEQuadrat (or something like that) that came with the machine
(Compaq). This type of format is supposed to make the CDRW something
like a floppy disk that can be read/written by all.

Now I have a 64-bit Dell machine with XP (media edition), and I can
not get the Roxio software, or Windows Explorer, to read the CDRWs.

When I insert one of the CDRWs and close the door it automatically
blinks a bit and then shows me the standard windowlet which offers
"Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer". There are other
choices but they don't pertain.

When I select the Windows Explorer option the cd writer whirls a short
time and then just gives up. Neither will it allow me to write a file
to the CDRW. The XPME seems to think that the CD is both read only
and full which is what MyComputer reports when I click Properties on
the drive.

On my portable, which has Home Edition, the machine will read and
write files on the CDRW.

Is there some way I can make my XPME act like my XPHE?

FWIW: I opened Roxio and found a format option to format a disk as a
UDF. Is that the same as my old "Packet Format"? So I took a new
CDRW and formatted it that way. It took about half an hour. When it
was finished I tried to write to it, but MyComputerProperties report
it as full and read only. I took the newly-formatted disk over to my
laptop and got the same response. The laptop says the disk is either
"non-writable or full".

I am totally confused and wish I hadn't given away my 98SE software
with the machine because that software would probably have worked
here.

Maybe I am doing something wrong. I hope somebody can help me. I
suppose I can copy the files from the laptop to an external HD and
move them over to the Dell. But Roxio described the UDF format as
capable of being used with Windows Explorer, SendTo and drag and drop
operations.

I'm not sure what this means, but the DLA is enabled, if that matters.
It's sort of like XPME can't read UDF. Is there something I can do
about that?

Thanks
