XP hangs

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

I have just put in a new Liton DVD-RW drive in my old emachines. I am
having this problem of XP hanging sometimes. For some reason while the
screen is black and XP loads it most important files just before the
boot screen it hangs. It power switches light stays on but when press
goes off but the system is still on. I can hear the fans. I then have
to take to power off. It sometimes does this and wont restart. I have
modified the BIOS settings so that it does dont detect what koind of
hardware is on the IDE buses. But still sometimes it does happen and
takes longer to clear. Usually the only way to get windows to boot up
is to have the DVD-RW drive tray open at the time of the boot and then
windows continues but sometimes this does not work and i just do
restart after restart and it evenutally boots up. I have a 1.2ghz
Celeron, 381MB RAM, Intergrated Graphics. what could be the problem
and how do i sort it out. I have also tried it with windows 2000 and
it does the same thing.
