I just bought a new home computer. My old one had Win98 and of
course lots of programs and stuff that I want to keep.

the new one has XP and I can get the free upgrade to Vista.

Question: Do I want to go from using WIN98 to XP and then wait on
Vista or do I want to go straight from win98 to using vista?

You DO NOT want to upgrade that Win98 machine to Vista. Some of the
hardware and most of the software in Win98 is considered obsolete in
Vista and would make much more sense to upgrade it to WinXP. Just
make sure to backup every file you deem necessary first before
performing the upgrade...

That's NOT the question. OP has bought a new "Vista Capable"
machine, that ships with XP installed.

McFly,

Read the whole thing and use your cognative skills to put together that the
OP is not upgrading the old Windows 98 machine to Windows Vista (or even
asking about it.)

The OP is merely stating that they have been using Windows 98 on an old
machine up to this point. They JUST bought a new machine. That new machine
came with Windows XP and a free upgrade to Windows Vista.

What they want to know is if they should get the free upgrade to Vista and
therefore - go from USING Windows 98 to USING Windows Vista - or if they
should, instead, just leave the new machine at Windows XP and go from USING
Windows 98 to USING Windows XP.

They *USE* Windows 98 now on their old machine.
Their NEW machine came with Windows XP and a chance to upgrade to Windows
Vista.
They want to know if they should start USING the new machine with XP or
upgrade and start USING the new machine with Vista.

The key word in the OPs original post was 'USING'.
