Took my computer in to get hard drive replaced. The guy (without asking) uninstalled my Genuine Version of Windows XP Home and replaced it with the "FAKE" XP PRO along with a couple of other things he replaced! Of course, now, my problem being that Microsoft continues to tell me I need to purchase an authentic version on Windows etc etc etc.l..
How do remove XP PRO and put my version back on?? Step by Step Please.
Tried to reinstall mine and I get this message:
-- Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD. Warning: If you decide to delete the newer version of Windows that is currently installed on your computer, the files and settings cannot be recovered.
Need someone to point me in the right direction so I can keep.......
Looking Ahead
The hard drive was probably replaced or the information wiped and there was no economical way of saving what was on it. In either event they should have asked what you wanted done if it came to that.
1. Take it back to the person that fixed it along with your genuine XP CD (& the COA if its not on the computer's case) and have them re-image the drive. They will have the tools to get around the problem that you are experiencing.
2. Slipstream your XP CD with service pack 2. Ask to download 'Autostreamer' (its free) on Google to make it easy. You will need the ability to burn an ISO to CD if you go that route. Basically you will be making a new XP CD that will be compatible with the current install.
3. Use a DOS boot floppy to fdisk the hard drive and wipe out the 'fake' XP install. A Win98 boot floppy is one of the better ones. Again go to Google and ask for what you need. Obviously your comp must have a floppy drive to accomplish this.
Many here can help you with 2 or 3 above, if you don't know how just ask.
