Hi Jay,
You may be right. MS might not have updated the inbuilt CD burner for years
but it works for most data CDs unless and until you have a corrupt blank
media. I have tried both Nero and MS and still at times I too get fixation
errors and when I insert some good seeming media, then all works well.
Whatever the problem may be, in the end, all we want is a safe and reliable
CD burner and after much research, I have found one good software called
PowerISO which is capable of rendering almost all compressed and image
formats without any problem. And now I only use PowerISO. However, for VCDs
and some other types of CDs, you may have to rely on Nero or MS or the best
rated software in the market; Roxio.
I would recommend PowerISO for data/image CDs and Roxio for VCD/Audio etc.
Anybody else who had some experience with these, may also share their
experiences in this thread.
Thanks,

Hi Nitin,.
That only turns on the inbuilt cd burner, and has no effect on enabling Nero
or any other burning app.. Having a recording tab does indicate that an
optical drive is capable of writing to cd/dvd for the most part,
autorun/autoplay settings are a separate issue altogether..
I have no problems burning cd/dvd's on the drive my bundled Nero 5 came with
4 years ago.. I have also disabled the IMAPI CD burning service, to be sure
the outdated and limited featured XP inbuilt will not interfere with Nero,
with no ill effects..
I agree for the most part Nitin with what you are saying, if I wanted or
were conserned about how blank media is shown, after all what is the purpose
of worrying about a blank disk as long as it can be written to by the third
party burning app, aesthetics..?
The XP inbuilt has not been updated by MS or anyone else since 2003, so why
use it..?
Cheers

Also, windows shows you the 0 bytes written/free because you might not
have
enabled your CD burner for writing. Try enabling it by right clicking it
and
selecting Enable CD Recording on this drive. After this, you will be
correctly able to view the exact capacity of your CD in the drive.

Hi,
Your ver is locked to the original optical drive it was bundled with and
you
won't be able to use it on another drive.. The version you have is old
and
you may need to update or upgrade to the full retail ver, if not on the
list
in the link below..

I use Nero Express 5.5.10.56, can't use it on my new drive, the log
indicates at the end, "Could not perform Fixation" if I try to, so I
don't..

Mine is Windows xp pro with sp2.
I have Nero Express 0.3.18 bundled version installed.
Previously with this I could burn cd's.
Now I cannot do so.
Whenever I insert Blank CD it shows in property:
Used space 0 bytes
Free space 0 bytes
Capacity 0 bytes
As a result whenever I try to burn CD's it says burn failed.
Please suggest some way to solve this problem.
Thanks.
