Thank you for your response. I tried the first two of your recommendations
and still the logon screen comes up, only this time with a warning that says
I'm not permitted to sign in (although it goes away and I can go ahead and do
so).

I don't know what you mean by "adding the Dialog box that comes up when

Control Panel to you make this add?

What if I just deleted all the names listed as having to sign in to my
computer-administator, owner, guest and one other?

For the printer issue contact the printer tech support.

For the autologon:

1. Go to Start | Run and type in: control userpasswords2 | Ok.

2. On the Users tab, clear the Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To
Use This Computer check box and then click OK.

3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the user name
and password for the account you want to be logged on each time you start
your computer.

You can accomplish the same thing by:

Download and install tweakui for xp and use its auto logon feature.

Lastly you can add the Dialog box that comes up when running control
userpasswords 2 to the Control Panel with the following tweak:

Add Control User Passwords2 to the Control Panel (Line 1)

Sorry, I don't know why it won't let you autologin if you followed those steps exactly. Do all the accounts have passwords?

When you go to Start | run and type in control userpasswords2, and click ok, it brings up a dialog box. The tweak I gave you the link for will add that dialog box as an option to the control panel. So now you would have the User control panel and another control panel item to open that dialog box. To get it you would download and run that edit I gave the link for.

What do you mean delete the names? Do you mean delete those profiles?

You cannot remove the built in Administrator account, not should you try. That account should have a strong password put on it, and then set it aside, to be used only if something damages the normal working account. The guest account can and should be disabled, but not deleted. It is not needed (unless you're on a network) and is a security risk. If you want an account for your casual visitors, then create another account, give it some name like visitor and make it a limited user account.

You need to keep at least one other admin level account. It's best to operate in a limited user account if you can, but some programs won't work in a limited account.

Any other accounts you don't use, you can delete.
