Thanks for your assistance, I did the repair and it seems to have worked ok.
I think I had all the malware stuff off before the repair, using Kaspersky
antivirus, Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy.

If the same, retail version of XP is the installed as the version on the
upgrade CD, ie Home or Pro, then yes you can do a repair install from an XP
Upgrade CD.
This could be a malware issue too. Here are some links for dealing with
malware. Make sure the computer is clean before you try the repair install.
