Please, I really need help with this problem and it is very difficult to get
help in this newsgroup. But you are trying and that is very kind and thanks
for all replies.
I want to free some space on several disks, its much easier and faster to
run format but I want to keep maybe 40% of my files.
Explorer use far too much memory and lock it up untill I reboot. I mean the
swapfile.
Windows worked hard every day to make the swapfile bigger and bigger up to a
little more than 2 GB and then it stoped to respond, often Windows do not
respond and I have a newer computer without reset.
Latest ver of XP pro should not stop completly to respond as my version do.
I bought it before christmas and it has only been problems with it. It was
updated last time yesterday.
I now use a fixed swapfile min/max 3 GB and it can be used up to 2.5 GB
before Windows completly stops to respond.
All my programs running need a little more than 300MB swap but as soon as I
start to erase files Explorer use more and more.
I have a new Windows install and I have checked Ad aware pro and Spybot.
But problem is on the SATA drive, I dont now for ATA as it is disconnected
now.
I had these problem before on ATA but it was a smaller problem and it exist
in all Windows versions.
Normally its no problem to erase thousends of files but now I can only erase
about 600 files. Its maximum if I want to continue without problem.
I also used crypted volyms and I was in douybt about SATA driver,
I have the same problem on normal disks without crypt, I also used thumbnails.
I have the same problem with or without thumbnails
and finally, yesterday I got the new SATA driver. Still same problem.
Now I have checked all that you have suggested.
If I use thumbnails Windows can only show a few, the rest is emty frames.
Windows cant even show all file icons in a folder.
It seems to be to much work for Explorer, as it is "down on its knees" BUT
other programs are not affected by lack of memory.
No matter if I run 20 other programs at the same time or only Explorer, the
problem is the same.
This problem has alway been with Windows but now its much worse.
The only thing left to suspectis the Google searchbar but I dont think
thatsthe problem.
Again, please note what is my problem. In a big folder with thousends of
files its big problem to erase more than 600 files. But no problem to erase
the whole folder. Erasing a folder is like only erasing one single file but
erasing 600files may take more than 30 minutes if Explorer can do it.
It takes just seconds to erase a whole folder. Why?
I also use Zilla shred. It overwrite files 3 times and does that faster than
Explorer can erase the same files.
Do you know any replacement for Windows Explorer?
More problem with Exploerer, if these problems have started ones and I mark
something like 10 files to be erased, in the moment I erase the files
Explorerchange it to other files so intead of 10 erased files maybe I erase
300 other files. I dont use recycle bin as I erase to much files.
Also, all files can be marked, if i change folder to parent folder, all
folders are maked here and all folder names gone.
I need to find the right folder in the tree and change folder name by adding
a space or similar and the tree or search path work again for some minutes.
Untilit happen again that I cannot mark what I want to mark and files and
folder names are gone.
Note, if this happen to a folder named DOWNLOAD and I change name to DOWN
LOAD I can never again use the folder name DOWNLOAD at the same place in the
tree because if Imake a new folder weeks after with same name at the same
place the problem is still there, no file names.
One thing I cannot understand, where is the memory to keep track of old file
names?
It dont help to shred the folder and make a new with same name. If name and
place is the same the problem is there right from the start. No file names.
But I have had connection problem with SATA but but but why does it only
affect Explorer and not other programs? But it is some in/out problem. SATA
is new but mobo is one year old.
I dont know if Explorer work faster/better on a crypted USB ATA disk, at
least not slower. The SATA drive should be much faster I think but it is not.
I have to try it ... SATA should be faster and not crypted and connected
direct to mobo while ATA use USB. I suppose that USB should be slower.
