When you did the above, were you booting off your hard drive or
CD-ROM drive?

Please describe your disk. Is it one of these:

Windows XP HOME EDITION
Windows XP HOME EDITION with Service Pack 1
Windows XP HOME EDITION with Service Pack 1a

Is it an installation disk?

What exactly do you mean by SP2 CD?

Are you able to boot into either regular or safe mode?

Also, is your disc an installation or recovery disc? What is the
make of your PC? Does it have a hidden partition?

A few thoughts...

1. You said that things started going haywire after installing a Norton
antivirus update. But note that Microsoft says "Do not use a repair or
in-place upgrade to resolve a problem with third-party programs, files
or registry entries."

So even after the repair is complete, it's quite possible you will still
have problems! I would look into resolving the Norton issue on its own.
If it's more trouble than it's worth, I would advise a *clean* install
of the OS.

2. But if you still want to go through with the repair (or wish to
perform one at some time in the future)...

In an earlier post, you said:
"I have already started the repair the system is at the stage where it
reboots. When it comes up it wants the SP1 disk, and it won't take the
one I down loaded. So I am not sure what I should do next."

And in your first post:
"I am in the process of trying to do a XP repair, I am to the point
where the
sytem reboots. It is now requesting that I put in the SP1 disk."

It sounds to me like you are being instructed to install the Windows XP
HOME EDITION with Service Pack 1 disk (i.e., the OS installation disk)
after the reboot. But if I understand you correctly, you are instead
putting in the wrong disk (SP 1, which you downloaded from the Web
site).

3. What exactly happened when you tried to perform a System Restore?
*That* might be the better course of action. Again, if there's just too
much wrong, I would back up your data, get all your drivers in order,
and just do a clean install. You said your disk is an Upgrade. Do you
have the original OS media?
