I'm having a similar problem (I think). My nephew (little boy) had a
problem running a game he loves. After much troubleshooting, we
finally reformatted. However, he didn't know where his windows xp cd
was (his dad/my brother installed originally, and he's having personal
problems and we can't reach him to locate the cd).
So...I used my windows xp cd to reinstall Windows on my nephew's pc.
Everything works great, the game works again, my nephew is thrilled
(he is using this game as a form of escape, I believe, but for the
time being, I think it's okay with all the problems going on in the
family).
The problem we are running into is this: Windows will expire in a few
days unless we activate, but for some reason, when we try to type in
my windows activation product key, we can't type the few
"5s" in my key. I called Microsoft and they said they think
the "new pc I'm installing Windows on believes this key is still
being used on another pc" and won't take the new key. Well, I
was transferred to a whole bunch of different "technicians"
none of whom spoke English as a native language, and I got nowhere. I
finally hung up in the end. *Complicating matters is the fact that
I'm disabled and have been quite ill this past year...(and poor as a
result)...so this has not been an easy situation...and I want to help
my nephew any way I can.
Is there any way around this? Will Windows XP just shut down after 30
days?
Thanks so much for your help. I appreciate any you may offer.
Firstly, as a general rule you should not post a new question as a reply to someone else's thread - that's called hijacking. Create a new message with your issue. In this case your issue is in no way similar to that of the OP. He's trying to use a drive with XP installed on one brand of computer and use it to boot a different brand.
You're trying to install your copy of XP on another computer. So you need to provide some info to get a specific answer. Here are some rules for the use of an XP license.
XP with the same license key cannot be installed on two computers at the same time. So if it's still installed on your computer you can't install it with the same license key on another one. If your copy is a retail copy, and you first uninstall it from your computer, then it can be installed on another computer.
Also if the copy of XP you have is OEM it cannot be moved to a different computer even if removed from the first. By the license agreement for OEM copies, it is tied to the first computer on which it's installed.
If you need more info post back.
