Irrespective of whether the video card is the culprit or the monitor,
is there any way by which I can make culprit support 1024X768 (of
course, other than buying a new video card or a new monitor)?
You do not state if it had been previously set at the higher resolution
No, AJR, I have never ever set the resolution to 1024X768.
Thanks to both of you for your responses.
Since the adapter had that resolution as an option on its slider, I
suspect the adapter can handle the resolution. You might try changing
the screen refresh rate under the Monitor tab, and see if the new
settings will be accepted.

Joe, you have hit the nail on the head. I changed the monitor refresh
rate from 70 Hertz to 60 Hertz & now I am being allowed to use the
1024X768 screen resolution but the problem is when I change the
refresh rate to 60 Hertz, the screen goes on flickering (I don't know
whether I have used the correct term or not but it's somewhat like how
the lights in a pub blinks) at the speed of knots & it really strains
the eyes (I am not referring to the screen getting blackened out when
Windows implements the changes made in the refresh rate or the screen
resolution). This doesn't happen if the refresh rate is set to 70
Hertz or more.
Is there any way by which I can stop this flickering of the screen
when the refresh rate is set to 60 Hertz?
Thanks a lot for your suggestion...
