I have a laptop with XP installed. I have a desktop running Media Center
Edition (soon to be upgraded to Vista). I would like to upgrade the
laptop
from XP to Media Center. Any way I can do it without buying a whole new
XP?
(I'd like to run that "aquarium" screen saver on the laptop)?
Are you talking about using the MCE edition currently on the desktop to
install on the laptop? If so it can't be done by the EULA. MCE is an OEM
product and so by the license agreement, it's tied to the first computer on
which it's installed and can't be moved to another computer.
Additionally, where you planning on using an upgrade edition of Vista to
upgrade the desktop that has the MCE? If so the license for MCE (or any OS)
that is used as the qualifying product for the Vista upgrade is subsumed
onto the Vista license. Once Vista is installed, that copy of MCE cannot be
installed at the same time, even on that same computer, such as in a dual
boot configuration. If Vista is removed from the computer then that MCE
copy can be reinstalled on that computer.
If you want to run a dual boot with XP MCE and Vista then purchase a full
edition of Vista.
