I have an icon in the system tray of two computers with a red cross

"Local Area Connection - A network cable is unplugged".
However, I do not have a wired network, I only have a wireless
network for internet access which works fine.
The icon is telling you that you have a wired network connection without a
cable plugged into it. That is apparently correct, since you are using a
wireless connection instead.
That's perfectly normal, and doesn't represent a problem at all. My laptop
has both a wired and a wireless connection, and I see the same thing when I
use my wireless connection.
Just ignore the icon.
