Thanks Paul, as you say it's probably time just to get by with the
alternatives!

What version of WMP are you using? Have you checked windows updates? to see
if WMP needs updating? What speed is your machine? you think WMP is being a
hog on your machine resources because of your machine specifications?
RealPlayer probably uses less resources? There is a program floating round
called "Windows Media Player Classic" have you tried that?
But to be really honest, if I start having a problem with an application and
I find another I can use, I do so, until I'm due to do a re-install, as you
are probably aware, generally all machines, no matter what specifications
slow down over time, as more programs/settings are added.
Sorry I can't be of much more assistance on this matter.
Regards
Paul.

Hi Paul,
SInce I last was in touch, I've found a way of getting round the problem,
although not solving it. I've changed the 'Open With' option on all the
Video
formats to Real Player rather than Windows Media Player, and I'm able to
launch videos with no problem. This suggests the problem is connected with
Windows Media Player - any thoughts?

Frank,
When a file is converted from one format to another, or played on a
machine,
generally it uses a codec, mainly decompression codecs, as files are
smaller
as they are compressed, for example a dvd (afaik) uses mpeg4, to enable
high
quality, in small spaces, by only making changes that are needed, for
example if you have a lake with a bird flying across, the sky doesn't
need
to change, only the bird, and the ripple of the water, so other bits are
technically removed, but when the mpeg4 encoder sorts this, the mpeg4
decoded is needed to understand what needs doing. Now if you have a file,
that uses a particular codec, and the machine is looking for it, it may
cause the program to lock up, if it can't find it, or the codec installed
maybe be corrupt, or an older version.
There is various software out there that can tell you what codecs are
installed, I use a program call Video Inpector
http://www.kcsoftwares.com/index.php?vtb that tells me if I have the
codec
installed on my machine..
Do you notice if windows media player comes up with "Downloading Codec"
at
the bottom of the screen when you start to play a file?
Have you tried the file on another machine? Do you sometimes go to play a
file, and just get the sound with no picture, just pretty graphics
displayed
on Windows media Player?
Regards
Paul.

Hi Paul,
Not sure what you mean, could you be more specific - how do I go about
checking codecs?

You have all the relevant codecs installed/setup correctly? Dunno if
that
might be an issue?

After launching several video clips one after another from either
Windows
Explorer or in Internet Explorer, the respective programme and/or
Windows
Media Player hangs, requiring me to End Programme in
Alt+Shift+Delete.
The
CPU usage also rises to over 50%.
Any suggestions?
