Being curious about Vista, I went to the home page and read all about it.
May be a bit much for my limited puter usage. Question is: Is Vista intended
to supercede XP SP2, or is it an optional program?

Vista is an operating system. It's relationship to XP is the same as XP was to Windows 2000/98/me/95. There are several Vista newsgroups. I would suggest you spend some time in microsoft.public.windows.vista.general if you want info about Vista.
