You need to run regedit from the desktop disk. You will.
then have an option to open the registry file on the laptop
disk.
Here is an alternative that avoids removing the disk:
1. Boot the machine into Recovery Console, using your WinXP CD.
2. Copy the file c:\windows\system32\config\system to c:\ and to
c:\Backup (to be on the safe side!).
3. Copy the file c:\windows\repair\system to c:\windows\system32\config.
4. Boot the machine normally. It will look the way it looked when
you last installed Windows.
5. Use regedit.exe to edit the registry file c:\system.
You can now examine the pointer for userinit.exe and the drive
letter assignments in HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevices and
compare them with the settings in the active registry.

Hi Pegasus,laptop
you mean run the regedit.exe of desktop, or the regedit.exe from the
hdd? coz if run the file from desktop, it only let me to edit that desktophdd,
registry only, right? then if run the regedit.exe file from that laptop
will it also link back to that desktop's registry?take
yup ... my laptop is that slim one ... so now thinking how to remove the
casing or keyboard to take out the hdd.
Thank you

You can now connect the laptop disk to a desktop PC
and run regedit.exe to edit the laptop registry. This will
enable you to examine/modify the reference to userinit.exe.
It will also let you change the drive letter of the system
drive, which is probably wrong.
With some laptops you need to remove just one or two
screws to remove the disk. With the very slim ones you
must remove the keyboard, which can be very, very
difficult.
