I have a Dell Dimension 8200 computer with windows XP Pro (SP2) and current
MS updates installed (except for month of Jan 2007). I looked at the file
entries in the Downloaded Program Files (C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program
Files) and noticed the status of many of the files were listed as DAMAGED.
There were more of the DAMAGED files than listed below, but I was able to
right click on specific files, select the update command, and the file
status then become Installed. However, the files listed below, when I
selected update, no status change was noticed. I clicked on these files
again and the update command was not listed, only the remove and properties
commands were then listed as available.

Sam, I think you posted this yesterday, yes? There was at least one response to it. Have you seen it? If you can't find a previous post, then search for it on your name as Author, using Google Groups Advanced Search, in the newsgroup microsoft.public.windowsxp.general.
This is a peer to peer newsgroup with volunteers from all over the world. It can take 24-48 hours for someone two might know the answer to respond. If a post gets no response you should wait several days before posting again, which is not the case here, and in your second post indicate that it's a repost with no responses.
Here is the link to the Google groups search.

You're using OE for this post so I don't know why you haven't seen the reply to your post. Have you downloaded sufficient headers and searched for your name?
