On *my* web site? I don't have a web site.
Lest you think you are addressing Microsoft let me clarify that this is the
Windows XP General newsgroup (you may not realize that it's a newsgroup
since you are accessing it through the horrible web-based interface to it).
It's a peer support newsgroup. We are all just Windows XP users here,
helping each other if and when we can. We are not Microsoft employees (not
even those of us with "Microsoft MVP" behind our names; that's an honorary
title for having provided consistently helpful advice) except for an
occasional employee who posts here unofficially on his own time.
but the info does not agree with what functionality
people actually have. Mayeb some of the info is "old", and the SW has
been upgraded.
No, it really hasn't changed at all. Here's a summary of the differences:
XP Professional and XP Home are exactly the same in all respects, except
that Professional has a few features (mostly related to networking and
security) missing from Home. For most (but not all) home users, even those
with a home network, these features aren't needed, would never be used, and
buying Professional instead of Home is a waste of money.
For details go to
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_home_pro.asp
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/whichxp.asp
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/choosing2.asp
Also note one other point not mentioned on any of those sites: Professional
allows ten concurrent network connections, and Home only five.
As far as Media Center, that's a superset of XP Professional. It has
everything in Professional (with one exception--it can not join a domain)
plus its extra media-related features.
I am looking to buy a new laptop, and want capability/functionality,
If you would tell us exactly what capability and functionality you are
looking for, people here could advise you and make a specific
recommendation. Other than that, I can't give you any advice other than to
say that XP Home is just fine for the vast majority of home users.
but do not
want to go to Vista until is is has been thoroughly tested by the
public, and any
bugs fixed.
Three comments regarding Vista:
1. It has had *extensive* testing by the public. That's exactly what beta
testing is.
2. I'm running Vista Ultimate here right now, and have no problems at all
with it. I'm very happy with it.
3. Regarding "and any bugs fixed": *All* software (except the trivial) has
bugs. Developing complex software is an incredibly demanding task and
there's no such thing as perfection. If you wait for "any bugs [to be]
fixed," you will wait forever. Good software isn't bug-free, but it has few
bugs, bugs that affect you only in rare circumstances, and bugs that don't
have terribly serious consequences.
Whether to buy a computer with Vista now or wait is your choice, but
personally I see no reason not to do it immediately, if Vista is what you
want. If it were me buying a new computer, I would certainly choose Vista.
