When I go into my user account the error message, Windows explorer has
encountered a problem and needs to shut down, come up and my desktop does
not. If I delete my user account will all the files, especially the ones I
have moved to an external hard drive so that I could save them be deleted?

If you delete a Windows User Account it will generally delete all of the files for that account. I don't see how this could affect an external drive, though, especially if you disconnect it first.
