hello. I have a Win XP Pro SP1 computer, which has two physical hard disks. I
have installed XP on one ('drive A') and the other one is used to store files
('drive B'), which is labelled 'DATA'.
the machine has been running smoothly until just now - I turn on the machine
and have discovered the following symptoms :
- the theme used in XP, which is stored in 'drive B' cannot be loaded
- the label of 'drive B', instead of the usual 'DATA', becomes 'Local Disk'
- the usage status of 'drive B' becomes
Free Space: 39.8BGB
Total Size: 39.8GB
which is definitely false because I have used much space on it
- when i try to open 'drive B' in Windows Explorer, Windows says the drive
has not been formatted
- none of the files stored in 'drive B' can be retrieved
I suspect the hard disk has malfunctioned.
is there anyway to bring it back into use without losing the files stored in
it?
You could try using some of the data recovery tools available. Here is one such which has a free trial use which will tell you if it can recover anything.

If the data is really critical you should send the drive to a data recovery specialist, though this can be expensive.

You should always have a full and complete backup of important data that's stored on internal hard drives. This backup should be done to external media such as a USB/firewire drive, CD or DVD. Best to have two forms of backup.
