USB Mass Storage driver

Got a new HP All-in One printer (C6180) and had no trouble with the
installation except I noticed a phantom drive on my system. If I
unplugged the printer from its USB port, the phantom drive went away.
The printer was telling my system that it was a hard drive. A hard
drive with no space. The phantom drive was annoying enough, but the
real problem is that my other USB ports didn't work while the printer
was hooked up and this phantom drive was there.
HP support was useless in every sense of the word. Finally, I found
the problem. HP's software changed something to do with the USB Mass
Storage driver. I disabled it and the phantom drive immediately
disappeared. What's more is that my other USB ports seem to be
working fine (With digital cameras and my MP3 player, anyway)
However, I'm about to purchase a large external drive and I'm
wondering if the disabling of the USB Mass Storage driver will keep it
from working properly.
Any thoughts?
