More than likely, she doesn't know what she is talking about by insisting you
don't need a mic, you do need a mic and if you want visual you need a web cam
and proper software to use both, I suggest yahoo messenger it's free, a web
cam with embedded mic connected via USB is fairly cheap 30-40 bucks. just
look carefully at the features for the web cam.

Typically there will be a hole for the "sound" to go into the microphone
just below a surface facing the user. Do you have a laptop? If it is a
separate monitor there will also need to be a microphone cord going from
the monitor to the PC. You could also look at the documentation for you
system.

you DO need an audio input device of some type.

Do you have a Microphone connected to your PC ? All PC's
have a input jack on the sound card panel to accept one. The
Pink colored socket is the PC-99 standard for Microphones.
If you do have a Microphone you have to use the Audio mixer
(Recording mode) to select it as the default input device and
make sure it's not Muted and that the volume slider is at a level
appropriate to be heard but not distorted.

I have a friend who is able to communicate with me over my speakers.
She says I can do the same by going to Tools and taking the mic off
mute but I can't find the setting. Can anyone help me?
