Re: Svchost problem

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

thanks again for your help thus far, right i hope this is the info you wanted
if not i think i know what i did wrong, lol:

Description says: Generic Host Process for Win32 Services

Path is: C:\WINDOWS\System32\Svchost.exe

command line is: C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs

i kinda realised that 31 processes aren't good haha but then thats just the
one svchost, the other 5 (i think) svchosts are running 6 services
alltogether. so all in all, 37 processes are using svchost?

thanks again

31 services using svchost.exe is a lot. Presemtly 6 are running on my
computer.

Column Selection

The information Process Explorer displays in its main window is fully
configurable. You can reorder columns by dragging them to their new
position. To select which columns of data you want visible in each of
the views and the status bar, choose View|Select Columns or
right-click on a column header and use Select Columns from the
resulting context menu. A column selection editor opens that let's you
pick the columns you want to enable for the Process, DLL, handle
panes, and status bar.

i really doubt it could be malware or any type of virus as i do
daily
scans as i like it all clean and i defragment every week etc. etc. i
have checked the process which uses the highest CPU usage and theres
31 services depending on it! would i have to just turn one off then
aback on thenthe next etc.?

also, i have noticed after the svchost stops hogging the CPU its
uses
ALOT of memory, IE7 uses bout jsut over 50k with 2 tabs and svchost
uses 89k max, when it does this, the CPU is still 100% and its then
MsMpEng thats hoggig the CPU for a while.

how do you get the description, path and command line up? im
confused
at that bit.

thanks for all the help and replies,

After ditching Cacheman download Process Explorer.

For further information about Process Explorer see here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/ProcessExplorer.mspx

To ascertain which service is causing the problem select the
svchost
producing the high CPU usage, right click, select Properties,
Services. Note there are the full names and
some explanation of what each service does.

You will find further information on Services here:
http://majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=12

To trace the particular Service involved you need to turn off each
service in turn and then restore it noting what effect it has on
CPU
usage. However, you need to take care and watch what other Services
are dependent on that service. When you click on the Dependencies
tab
allow it a little time to display the information.

What is the Description, Path and Command Line of the Process
using
the CPU?

i think i should have a good clean out then and ditch Cacheman, i
have more than enough cooling for it, it just gets used too much
by
the process.

You have a number of non-related issue(s).

First off dump Cacheman. It's attempt to override XP's native
memory handling isn't helping and likely hurting your
performance.

Quiescent memory for XP should be 275-350. If your PC is using
that much physical RAM then you've got problems with Startups &
Watchdogs or some form of Malware infestation.

Svchost instances are dependant on the Services that run on the
PC.
You don't pare down SvcHost instances, rather the services that
are
mapped inside of them.

If the Celeron is running at 55 Celsius then you've got
inadequate
cooling for your processor.

Basically, it sound like you've "Over Tweaked/Over Tuned" the PC.
I'd recommend a professional tune-up.

Hi,

I have read loads of threads and posts through other websites
etc.
but is there an 'easy' way to make the svchost use less RAM and
CPU? i enjoy gaming
and i have just been forced to buy another 512MB RAM stick a
couple
of minutes ago, when window starts up the RAM usage is roughly
346MB then it springs up to 498MB with svchost, I have
CachemanXP
and that frees RAM up but
then its just used again.

I actually cant run ANY program, not even explorer or task
manager,
i have to wait about 5 - 10 mins before the app opens. and
during
a
game it just laggs so badly as svchost just randomly starts
hogging
the RAM and CPU for ages and im forced jsut to leave the pc
sitting
idle but the Celeron then jumps up to 55 degrees so i stopped
doing
that.

Any help greatly appreciated

Regards,

Richard
