It's a built-in facility that steps back operating speed when a
number of errors are reached. Unfortunately, once stepped
back the system doesn't automatically restore the mode to it's
optimal value. It could be either the controller or the drive .
There is a registry edit that can be applied to clear the error
count on a successful transfer that can help prevent step back
mode changes. This type of issue happens more frequently on
optical drives that have difficulty reading a disk than hard drives.

Hi Bob , thank u for the answer. Today i wrote an image back before
that
happenend again. There the channel shows ULTRA DMA MODE 6. So i think
it
must
be that problem. how can i find out if it is the drive or channel.

Remove that one and allow it to reinstall so as to reset it to use
DMA.
If that fixes it for the short term, then you have a hardware problem
with the drive or channel.

hello bob
there are 4 primary ide channels
one of them is in pio mode

Just a thought, look in Device Manager, and see if the primary IDE
channel has reverted to PIO mode due to drive errors.

I've got a new PC. Dual Core with 2 Gb Ram. I installed all my
programs on
it. After 4 days the PC hung up. After i restart, booting took
around
4 - 6
minutes. And the windows sounds and sounds from games sounds
scratchy.
When
i play music and i open a window like control panel the music gets
scratchy.
I installed again and after 4 days the same thing. During a 3D game
i
heard
the
ingame sound very scratchy. And i had Problems to leave the game
with
the ESC
key. I had to end it with the task manager. It takes again a long
time
to
boot. what could that be? can somebody help me. Is there a windows
file that
grows up?
