Re: Start Windows Defender Service

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Sheila

Log on in Safe Mode as the Administrator ( not your usual Logon ) and this should enable to change all permissions for your own for day to day use. Grant your self Special Permissions.

Explanation of Safe Mode
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safe_Mode

Most computers use the F8 key to access Safe Mode but there are some variations.

Next have a look at the permissions shown in the Registry. Look at Method 3 in the following KB Article:
You receive an "Administrators only" error message when you try to visit the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316524/en-us

In the Article at Step 2 it says Windows\Current Version\Windows Update. Read it substituting Windows Defender.

Hope this helps.

It seems that we are not alone (judging by the Google searches!). I
was aware that it ran out on 31 December so I removed the old
Windows
Defender and downloaded the new version. Everything went fine until
I
tried to Run the program! I now get this message "Service "Windows
Defender Service" failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient
privileges to start system services."

Reading the Google searches on this subject, it would appear that I
would have to change the Administrator, rerun the program, wait for
the You do not have permission (or whatever) and rechange the
Administrator. It will then work but the catch is you have to do
this
every time you reboot. Surely Microsoft must be aware of this
problem
with reinstalling the new version. I have done searches on the
Microsoft "Help" (for want of a better word!) and nothing appeared.

Anyone have any ideas before I go completely mad!
