I'm curious as to where the Registry file (folder?) is stored in XP. Specifically, when I do a simple backup using the NT Backup utility, am I backing up the registry as well?
If you backup the system state, then yes the registry is backed up. To restore it, restore the system state. I prefer to use a different utility to make a daily backup of the registry that can be restored through the recovery console. I use ERUNT. Here are some links for it.

The registry is stored in several files in different folders.
Most of them are in the %systemroot%\System32\Config folder [normally C:\windows\system32\config]:
Default
Sam
Security
Software
System
And the user portion are kept in Ntuser.dat and Ntuser.dat.log files in the root directory.
