Display set too low:can't see "settings"

Trying to access old system's display settings. Apparently it is set
too small for my monitor to output anything but a 6-inch-square desktop.
Trying to enter its settings, when I right-click on desktop I cannot see the
settings display--same with icons, they are beyond scope of the screen. How
can I increase the screen resolution? Thanks, S

.
