I agree with your assessment, RajKohli. I think the best thing to do is to
check first and see if the hard drive is connected properly, and being
recognized by the system. Unfortunately, I don't know what the ‘CMOS setup’
command is for my Sony PCG-FXA36. I tried pressing <delete> but nothing
happened. As I stated in another reply, there are two things that can happen
when this computer is powered up:
1. If the Sytem Recovery CD is in, the screen will go to the first window of
System Recovery.
2. If any other 'nonbootable' CDis in, or no CD is in at all, then the
screen just gives a constant cyclical message:
Intel UNDI, PXE-2.0 (build 082)
Copyright (C) 1997-2000 Intel Corporation
For Realtek RTL8139(A/B/C)/RTL8130 PCI Fast Ethernet Controller v2.11 (001205)
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.
How do I find out what button or combination of buttons to press to check
the ‘CMOS’ setup?
Please advise.
Thank you.

Before you make it more complicated with the Bootable and Recovery CDs, I.
will suggest you to check the hard disk first.
1. Turn on your Laptop.
2. Open CMOS setup by press DEL key or they key required by your BIOS. See
the first screen (POST) for information.
3. Find the Standard CMOS settings or IDE / Hard Disk settings. Make sure
that your hard disk being detected by the BIOS before you proceed further
with CD booting process.
You said "I just installed a replacement hard drive" means did you installed
it by yourself? Could be possible that the disc is not properly plugged.
Hope this information helps you, let us know!

I'm sorry I didn't include this bit of information in my previous posts:
When it asks me to continue, and I type "Y" for "yes", the phrases
Creating a C: partition
Error 0x1
show up for just a second or so under the System Recovery CD window. Then
the screen goes black, except for the phrase
No fixed discs present
which flashes at the top for just a second or so. Then everything just goes
back in a continuous loop to the first System Recovery CD window asking the
same "do you wish to continue" question.

Windows is not up and running on this machine.
I installed a new (or reconditioned I guess) hard disc drive. I'm guessing
that there is nothing on it--isn't that the case with a new disc drive? It
is for my Sony PCG-FXA36 laptop computer I bought back in 2001. I can't use
Disk Management, because Windows is not loaded.
As far as I know, the Windows XP software is on the Sony System Recovery
Discs (quantity =3) which came with the original computer purchase. The
discs say they contain all the preinstalled software that originally came
with the system. I inserted the Sony System Recovery Disc #1, which
produced the "delete Non-DOS partition" message.
What do I hope to acheive? I hope to have everything up and running like it
was when I bought this laptop computer five years ago.
Please advise.
Normally non-DOS refers to a container created for logical partitions,
so it'd be safe to say that the drive is not wiped totally clean.
You can either use the manuf of the HD's software to wipe it or you can
actually use a win98 floppy boot disk to delete the non-dos partitions.
Actually when you got the option to continue just say yes as it may lead
you to delete partitions in the setup.......
