Re: Deleting Non-DOS Partitions

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

I used my other computer that is working, and went to bootdisk.com like you
suggested, and downloaded the Windows 98 OEM Boot program. There are other
98 options, like SE and Custom, but I used the first one on the list. Then I
saved it on a CD, and loaded it into my Sony. The computer did not recognize
the disc at all, and all I get is a continuous message that keeps repeating
itself:

Intel UNDI, PXE-2.0 (build 082)
Copyright (C) 1997-2000 Intel Corporation

For Realtek RTL8139(A/B/C)/RTL8130 PCI Fast Ethernet Controller v2.11 (001205)
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.

I used to get this message a lot during the final days before my original
hard disk crashed. Sometimes it would take several times of turning the
computer on and off, before Windows would boot up instead of this cyclical
error message.

I don't know how this relates to the new hard drive.

Please advise.

PS--I also gave some additional information in response to Tor's reply.

OK, things are becoming a lot clearer.

Every recovery disk (actually CD) I have used in the past
was able to restore Windows regardless of what was on
the hard disk. They could delete any pre-existing partitons
and start with an unpartitioned hard. I would be very surprised
if your Sony CD could not do the same.

If it can't then you can do this:
- Boot the machine with a Win98 boot disk (www.bootdisk.com).
- Run delpart.exe to delete any pre-existing partitions.
- Try your Recovery CD again.
- If still unsuccessful, use the Win98 boot disk once more
and run fdisk.exe to create the desired FAT32 partitions.

Windows is not up and running on this machine.

I installed a new (or reconditioned I guess) hard disc drive. I'm
guessing
that there is nothing on it--isn't that the case with a new disc drive?
It
is for my Sony PCG-FXA36 laptop computer I bought back in 2001. I can't
use
Disk Management, because Windows is not loaded.

As far as I know, the Windows XP software is on the Sony System Recovery
Discs (quantity =3) which came with the original computer purchase. The
discs say they contain all the preinstalled software that originally came
with the system. I inserted the Sony System Recovery Disc #1, which
produced the "delete Non-DOS partition" message.

What do I hope to acheive? I hope to have everything up and running like
it
was when I bought this laptop computer five years ago.

Please advise.

I just installed a replacement hard drive, the same model as I had
before.

When I booted up the System Recovery Disc, the following message came
up:
"The hard drive is not partitioned. This utility creates DOS
partitions
and
restarts your computer. If you see this message again, it may be
caused
by
non-DOS partitions on the drive. You must delete the non-DOS
partitions
to
proceed.

Do you wish to continue? (Y/N)"

Can someone please tell me how to delete the non-DOS partitions?

Thank you.

This sounds a little confusing.
- Is Windows XP up and running on your machine?
- What "System Recovery Disk" are you referring to?
- What do you wish to achieve when booting with this disk?
