RE: No Sound on IBM ThinkPad T42 - reply

Hi, I have a T20 running xp pro fine if occasionally a little slow. However,
the crystal soundfusion device is not supported in xp even though it says
it's loaded drivers. To get the onboard sound working you have to run win 98.
I tried everything from BIOS updates to downloading and installing a total
of 6 different drivers purporting to solve the problem.
In the end I bought Trust USB 5.1 external soundcard SC-5500p for about £12
including delivery from Pixmania.com - problem solved!
Because the T20 only has one usb port I have a powered 4-port mini-hub and
have a wireless mouse nd printer along with the soundcard leaving one spare
port and everything works well.
The USB soundcard is very good. In all but one application I've had very
good quality incl DVD's, streaming and mic.
So, I recommend an external soundcard at 3.5"x4.5" it's easily stowed with
the laptop in its case.
Seasons greetings and best wishes to all, David (AllFineArt)

For some reason, the only sound I get on my IBM ThinkPad T42 running WinXP SP
2 is the "beep." Sound was working fine for the last year until a Windows
Update about a month ago.

The Control Panel for "Sounds and Audio Devices" shows no playback devices
(under the Audio tab) and Device Manager lists only the following under
"Sound, video and game controllers":
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Video Codecs

So, I figured that all I need to do is re-install my sound card driver. I
went to IBM's support site:

http://www.ibm.com/products/finder/us/en/finders?pg=ddfinder

It auto-detected my system and referred me to:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-61604

I downloaded the driver and followed the installation instructions:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/license.do?filename=mobiles/1ga241ww.exe

However, when the installer finishes, I get the message:

"Driver Not Found! Reboot your system, and run this setup again."

Unfortunately, I get the same message after rebooting.

Apparently, I'm not the only person having problems installing SoundMAX
drivers:

http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/forum/drivers/22991-cant-find-driver-2.html

http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=oplex_audio&message.id=4736

While it is comforting to find others having this problem, none of their
proposed solutions helped me get my sound working.

Things I've tried include:

- Upgraded all drivers to their current versions using ThinkVantage
Software Installer;

- Flashed BIOS with most recent version;

- Re-set BIOS to default to make sure that audio hardware is detected;

- Deleted one or more items listed in the Control Panel for "Sounds and
Audio Devices" (see list above) to get XP to autodetect the sound card
hardware; and

- Manually installed driver using Device Manager.

I still have no sound other than, "beep"!

I tried the PC Doctor hardware check that came with the laptop and runs in
DOS7 (?). It says there is no audo hardware. But, it lets me play any
frequency on the speaker. Others who have had this problem (see links above)
have also reported that DOS diagnostics reported no audio hardware but they
subsequently were successful at installing the SoundMAX driver and got their
sound working again.

So, does anyone have any suggestions? Is there anyway that I can IBM to
diagnose/fix with this...even for a fee?

Thanks for reading my tale of woe. Any suggestions are appreciated.
