Re: Help and Support page will not open on WINXP SP2

Thanks for the reply Gerry. I certainly could empathize with the user in the
forum link you provided. I have printed the suggestions therin for future
use, if I should decide to try installing IE7 in future. Unlike that user,
my AV has given me no scan log indications any of my archive H&S files were
damaged. But if they were, I would suspect that the IE7 install is what
damaged them! I don 't think I had a pathing issue (unless IE7 install
changed the path) because H&S worked fine when I reverted to IE6. So should
I get bold & try to reinstall IE7, I will try the pathing correction script
provided in that thread to see if that resolves it for me. Personally, I'm
hoping MS gets these IE7 bugs worked out BEFORE Vista is released, because I
fear they will then have to spend the lion's share of time working out the
bugs in Vista! not IE7. I won't willingly upgrade to Vista until I have to
buy a new pc (or when MS ends support for WinXP). From what I've read, Vista
has an even greater learning curve than IE7.

I also am cautious about new releases. As you, I turned off Automatic
Updates & set it to "Notify me when Updates Available...." before the IE7
release date. I have always done Custom Installs on manual updates. I even
went a step further and installed the MS tool to Force Automatic Updates Not
to AutoDownload IE7. But when I learned I could easily revert to IE6 if
anything went wrong, I decided to manually download/install. Bad call on my
part. Sadly, like you say, thousands didn't take these steps. So I can be
described as paranoid perhaps. LOL.

I know MS will eventually get most of the bugs ironed out. They usually do.
But I'm just not willing to wrestle with it until they do. Thanks again for
your help.

BTW, where the heck is Stourport? Haven't heard of it. We spent 6 weeks in
1980 driving from London all the way up the east coast of England, up to
Edinburgh, down through the Lake District, over into Wales, down to Cornwall,
Clovelly, then through Devon, Plymouth and Lyme Regis and eventually made our
way back up to London. It was truly the trip of a lifetime. Absolutely love
Britain! Hope to go again one day.

Thanks for your help on my IE7 "Help" problem.

Computer addicts want tomorrows software. It is their demand which
encourages shorter beta testing programmes and earlier releases of new
versions. This latest version is Microsoft's attempt to retain / claw
back
market share from Firefox. We do not know what was in their minds but
with a new version out they should be able to sort out the bugs.
Especially
once the dust has settled after the release of Vista.

Jumping the hoops. You have a choice. What I think was a mistake
was that Automatic Update downloaded IE7 to users who were not
prepared for it. This should have been handled differently. Fortunately
my cautious nature worked in my favour on this occasion.

In Start, Control Panel, Automatic Updates I have Automatic
not checked and have checked "Notify me but don't
automatically download or install". When notified I always
commence the process by selecting Start, Help and Support,
Keep your computer up-to-date with Windows Update and opt
for a Custom install.

I thought it was a Texas drawl not lingo and ain't more Cockney
than Texan.

Is this your Help and Support problem?

Appreciate the info, Gerry. Yes, like I said in my original post, I
diligently read all release notes, Sandi Hardmeier's site and many
other
popular forum posts on the topic to see what problems were occurring
so I
would know what to expect during/after installation. They annoyed
me so I
actually considered not installing it at all. I could see up front
that it
was having many more problems than MS would care to acknowledge.

As I said in my second post, I just don't think users should HAVE to
jump
though this many hoops for a new browser. I don't WANT to read and
do all
that stuff to get IE7 to work right. Besides, Firefox is my default
browser
for most internet usage anyway. So battling to get IE7 to work right,
when
IE6 works just fine, just "ain't (pardon the Texas lingo) worth it",
IMHO.

MS Windows Help & Support (and other features for some users) should
not be
broken by Microsoft's own browser updates. Sorry....That's just not
acceptable SW development. Help & Support is a very basic, necessary
feature, in my opinion. I read the articles therein regularly. SW
developers need to design newer versions to work within the parameters
of
existing OS features, plain & simple. You expect bugs, but not in
such basic
areas of compatibility.

I appreciate your ino. But, I don't know about OP, but I tried to
get
forums
to tell me if Kelly's Corner fixes would work for IE7 (because I
thought they
were dated & would only work for IE6 & earlier) and nobody could
give
me a
straight answer to that question. FWIW, I had already tried most
of
the
things on the Kelly's suggestions to try and the reg items were
already set
that way in all cases. Help & Support Service was running in
Services;
System File Checker found no problems. IE7 install went OK for me,
but many
web pages seemed to refuse to load, so there were obviously other
"issues"
with it over and aabove the Help & Support problem for me.

I'm just not willing to reinstall IE7 to see if those settings are
being
"reconfigured" by the IE7 install itself. I refuse to do MS's
testing
&
experimentation. Users should not have to, and I personally refuse
to
spend
days reinstalling, reconfiguring, & struggling with pages of
fixes/workarounds and procedures to get a software to work properly
with the
operating system it was supposedly designed to work with! I did
much
reading
on the IE7 newsgroup, other forums and on Sandy's (She's on the IE7
team, but
can't remember her last name) website for what I should do to
"prepare
to
install IE7". That's all a responsible user should HAVE to do
IMHO.
MS
needs to go back to the drawingboard on this one. When they get
it
right,
I'll tell Windows Update to stop hiding this update.

Help and Support page will not open on WINXP SP2. The help page
has
stopped
responding. When the link is clicked from start in regular or
safe
mode it
will not work. Is there a way of getting it to work without
using
system
restore? There have been too many updates to do a system restore
and this
is
a slow dialup connection. Thank you for allowing me to post.
