What will happen if you use msconfig and choose diagnostic startup with
nothing checked under Services or Startup tab, reboot normally, and
afterwords restart with "last known good configuration"? Is it correct
that the "last known good configuration" in this case will have no
services?
I was trying to troubleshoot a problem with Windows automatically
shutting down within a few seconds of coming up, regardless whether I
logged in or not. I initially used msconfig in diagnostic startup mode
(with nothing checked in the Services or Startup tabs of msconfig), and
Windows rebooted in mornal mode & I logged in successfully without it
automatically shutting down.
Rather than try each and every service and startup item individually to
identify the problem, I then rebooted using the "Last Known Good
Configuration" and the result is that all the services, etc. are all
gone. The Device manager is empty, there are no network cards
recognized, etc.
Is there a way to get back to a version that has my services, etc.?
System Restore doesn't have any restore points before this.
Boot the computer with the XP CD and enter the recovery console. See this link:

From there restart the windows services using the Enable command. See thislink for a list of Windows services in XP and how they are configured in the default configuration.

Do not use msconfig to turn of Microsoft services. Those should be disabled in the services console: From start | run | services.msc. Why? Because of the problem you encountered.
